Today, Monday, is a normally bad day. College students hate the end of the weekend, and worse still, the start of a week of classes. Today, however, is like the trifecta of bad days. As many ESU students know, today is 4/20, but it’s a shitty day to celebrate. Also, since finals week is now the last week in April, instead of the first or second week of May, there is added stress of the start of studying for finals. Today is rainy and miserable out. Monday+rain+end of the semster=trifecta of shitty days. Here’s to you, busy ESU student studying and attending class on this 4/20.

The weather is becoming more and more spring-like, causing ESU students to flock to the quad. Tomorrow is the annual community on the quad event hosted by ESU. If you have never gone, trust me, it’s a great time. Most organizations on campus have some kind of raffle, game, or fundraiser. Businesses give away prizes and t-shirts. All-in-all, community on the quad is an all-around good time. Tomorrow the weather should be just as beautiful as today, so get out of your dorm and participate in ESU’s activities.

Today, I went to a journalism discussion held in the Senate Chambers. The guest speaker was Pro Publica reporter, Robin Fields. She spoke about the passion aspiring journalists must have, and the integrity investigative reporters must report with, but I didn’t feel inspired. She did a great job; she was smart and funny and quick-witted. I just have begun to realize in the final stretch of my time as a college student that I have no idea what I want to be when I “grow up.” With today’s economy, I’m not sure if uncertainty is a luxury I can afford to have. The future is definitely a scary place.

After spending the weekend at home for Easter, I am ready to finish up the year. This is the time in every semester that seems to strangle all the life out of ESU students. With this in mind, I spent my weekend catching up on reading and making lists of everything that needs to be done before finals week. This usually is a great way to stay on top of everything, and not get so stressed you doubt you will ever sleep again. Procrastination might seem like a good idea when it’s beautiful out and everyone is flocking to the quad. However, the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.
There are only three weeks left in the semester, which means the normal heap of work waiting to be done has turned into a Mount Everest of papers. Yet, like most college students, I seem to lack the motivation to put my nose to the proverbial grindstone. I do my homework, and things get turned in on time, yet there is always a certain level of stress needed to accomplish this. I have found, along with many of my fellow ESU students, that work just doesn’t want to be done until the absolute last minute. And to that, I say, why do today what you can put off until next week.

As I was alking to campus today, I noticed quite a few people outside enjoying the nice weather we are having in the burg. It was only noon though, and most of these people were drinking. I’m all for beer-b-ques and indulging in a few drinks outside on the porch in the nice weather, but at noon? Do any of these people have class or work to go to? Why does it seem like as soon as the temperature reaches past 60, ESU students must get drunk and pass out before dinner? It is Thursday, the unofficial start of the weekend, and with that in mind, remember, it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.

This story about a grandmother sueing McDonald’s is posted on the Pocono Record’s website today. Apparently, a loose lid is to blame for the spilled coffee, and the subsequent burn. Since the McDonald’s employee who served this coffee should have put the lid on correctly-especially since McDonald’s was successfully sued in 1994 for their negligence in informing their customers that coffee is in fact, hot-there actually is some validity to this lawsuit. I give credit to people like this grandma who spend their time actively pursuing ways to make money without really doing much. Isn’t it people like this who give Americans their fantastic reputation? Stick it to the man, grandma.

Over the weekend, an ESU student was hospitalized with bacterial meningitis. Meningitis is extremely contagious, but only for those who have been in close physical contact with the afflicted person. ESU sent out a mass email and text message alert with this story. It is extremely important for ESU students to be aware of what the symptoms of meningitis are, and to seek medical attention if they exhibit these symptoms. Meningitis can be deadly if it is not treated early enough.

Today is absolutely beautiful. Spring is showing up fashionably late, but better late than never. Also, today is every college student’s favorite day of the week: Friday. Classes seem to be shorter, and everyone seems to be in a good mood (unless they happen to be hungover from the night before). But, even hangovers have a way of disappearing when they find out it’s Friday afternoon. So, save the homework for tomorrow’s rainy complextion; go out and enjoy this beautiful spring day!
